9th International Research Conference of the Sri Lanka Forum of University Economists (SLFUE) – Sri Lanka Economic Research Conference (SLERC) 2020 was held on 21st and 22nd January 2021 at Uva Wellassa University with the participation of Deshamanya Professor Emeritus W.D. Lakshman, Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka as the Chief Guest and the Keynote Speaker and Professor Jayantha Lal Ratnasekera, Vice Chancellor of Uva Wellassa University of Sri Lanka chaired the inaugural session. The conference was organized as a hybrid event, both physically as well as an online event due to the pandemic situation by the forum under its current Chairmanship Dr. P.H.T. Kumara, Uva Wellassa University. The SLERC 2020 was hosted by the Faculty of Management and Department of Export Agriculture of the Uva Wellassa University.

This year’s theme of the conference was “Restoring Economic Growth and Prosperity of Sri Lanka: Options and Strategies” which is much aptly theme with the current situation of the country as well as the globe. By organizing the event, the forum aimed to academically contribute to the post COVID debate on speedy recovery of the Sri Lankan economy.

The Inaugural Secession of the Conference was held in the university premises with the participation of 150 members physically while all the other members attended online. A panel discussion on “Post COVID Revival of MSME Sector of Sri Lanka” was held with the participation of eminent academics and renowned business and professional leaders in the field and the Issue No 01 of the Volume 8 of Sri Lanka Journal of Economic Research (SLJER) was launched with a journal review by Professor Sumanasiri Liyanage. A special session on COVID19 Research was conducted by three member universities while more than 50 original research papers were presented in 8 defined tracks. 36th Meeting of the SLFUE was also held along the SLERC 2020 as a hybrid event.

The Sri Lanka Forum of University Economists (SLFUE) which was established in February, 2012 with the intention of enabling closer cooperation, dialogue, research and academic enhancement among the professionals in Economics serving in the Sri Lankan Public Universities currently possesses the membership of 33 Departments and Units that teach economics in the Sri Lankan University system and currently Uva Wellassa University Chairs the Forum.
