8th International Economic Research Conference of the Sri Lanka Forum of University Economists  was successfully held at Wayamba University of Sri Lanka which was  organized by Faculty of Business Studies and Finance and Department of Industrial Management, Faculty of Applied Sciences.

The 8th International Economic Research Conference (IERC) of the Sri Lanka Forum of University Economists (SLFUE) was held on 20th of December 2019. The selected theme for the conference was “Economic Empowerment: Challenges and Way forward”. The conference was held at Wayamba University of Sri Lanka and was successfully organized by the Faculty of Business studies and Finance with collaboration of the Department of Industrial Management of the Faculty of Applied Sciences.

Prof. EMP Ekanayaka, Vice Chancellor of Wayamba University of Sri Lanka graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. Dr Harsha Aturupane , a lead Economist of World bank was the Keynote Speaker of the Inaugural Ceremony of the Conference.

Former Chairmans and National Coordinators were awarded with a certificate of appreciation for their invaluable service rendered towards the betterment of the Sri Lanka Forum of University Economists (SLFUE) during its initiation.

Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka launched the volume 7(1) of Sri Lanka Journal of Economic Research at the inauguration ceremony of SLERC 2019 and the Journal Review was conducted by Prof Udith Jayasinghe, Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture and Plantation Management of Wayamba University of Sri Lanka.

A panel discussion on the topic “Empowering Sri Lankan Economy: Experiences and Way forward” was conducted with the participation of Industrial and Academic Experts just after the Inaugural Ceremony of the Conference. The panel discussion was successfully moderated by Prof. Sirimal Abeyrathne, Professor in Economics, University of Colombo. Prof. Sumanasiri Liyanage (Dean, SANASA Campus), Dr. Kulathunga Rajapaksha (Group Chairman, DSI Samson group), Mr. MSK Dharmawardhane (Director rural development – CBSL) & Dr. Udayasiri Kariyawasam (Former chairman BOC & business consultant) successfully conducted the panel discussion. The discussion was followed by a question and answer session where important questions were presented by the audience to be discussed by panel members. Considerable amount of Students representing Faculty of Business Studies and Finance who follow the course of macroeconomics also participated for the discussion and they gathered significant awareness through the discussion. The contribution of prominent scholars participated for the panel discussion provided ample opportunity to create healthy dialogue among economists and all other interested parties in development issues.

Moving in to research outcome of the 8th international conference, fair response was received to the call for papers from prominent universities and institutions. After the independent double-blind review process, 53 papers made in to the proceedings on the basis or originality, innovativeness, and significance of the research contribution in the light of the conference scope. The proceeding book was launched at the Inauguration Ceremony.

The Technical Sessions of the SLERC 2019 was conducted in the afternoon and academics, undergraduates, postgraduate from different Universities and professionals presented their research outcomes under nine different tracks (Agricultural, industrial and service Sector development towards an inclusive economy; Business & finance for economic empowerment; Economic of environment & Transport; Empowering SME & Entrepreneurship; Farming macroeconomic policies towards sustainability; Reshaping human capital for economic development; Social welfare, poverty alleviation and equity; Technology, innovation and language skills towards knowledge ; Trade , investment & economic integration) under the theme of “Economic Empowerment: Challenges and Way forward”. The conference was concluded on evening with positive feedbacks given by participants of the conference.
